Top tanning tips for a safe, healthy, golden tan.
For many of us, summer means hanging out at the pool or the beach, soaking up rays in pursuit of a golden tan. Sun exposure definitely does have many health benefits, such as creating Vitamin D in the body which is essential for many functions; bone health, supporting the immune system, strengthening teeth, protection against dementia and brain ageing. The healing powers of sunlight can also help to treat disorders, such as psoriasis, acne, eczema and fungal infections of the skin. Exposure to sunlight can also lower cholesterol & blood pressure, strengthen the immune system and combat depression.
Take Care – Over exposure to the sun has very negative health effect
Care must be taken however not to over do it. Sunburn or intense sun exposure has very negative health benefits.
Skin Cancer makes up 80% of all the cancers diagnosed in Australia every year. Melanoma cancer, the most serious type of cancer is at epidemic levels. The sun’s UVA & UVB rays may make us tan, but they can also cause serious damage.
In the past, melanoma mostly affected people in their fifties or older, but today dermatologists see patients in their twenties and even late teens with this type of cancer. Experts believe this is partly due to an increase in the use of tanning beds and sun lamps, which output high levels of UVA rays. Sunbeds have consequently been banned for use in Australia.
UVA damage is the main factor in premature skin ageing. Here in Hong Kong with the high UV rays, we must take care to obtain a good balance. Wear a hat and don’t expose your skin for long periods of time during summer’s peak intensity hours — 10am to 3pm.
Sunless Tanning Alternatives
World-wide consumers are looking for safe sunless tanning alternatives because lets be honest, there is nothing better then waking up with a natural glow all year round!
The active ingredient in sunless Organic and Toxic free products is called DHA or Dihydroxyacetone. It’s derived from cacao. DHA is a colourless substance that interacts with the dead cells located in the stratum corneum of the epidermis, and it doesn’t turn you orange. The TGA in Australia and the FDA in USA have approved the use of DHA for tanning.
Tanning Option At Glow Spa Hong Kong
We have two options available for the spray tan, both are professional salon tanning brands, one from Australia and one from the UK.
LDN:SKINS is the largest selling professional spray tan in the UK and used by many celebrities (Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Beckinsale, Pippa and Kate Middleton)
ECO Tan this popular Australian tanning brand is Australia’s no. 1 certified organic tan and body care system.available to our clients.
Both LDN:SKINS and ECO Tan are professional salon products and both developed to a beautiful colour, the shades work with your natural skin tones and develop accordingly (getting darker the longer you leave them on), up to 12 hours with the overnight tan and 6 hours with the express tan.
The application appointment takes about 30 – 45 mins in the salon and will be done myself or another senior therapist.
Both tans have a guide tan (so we can see it as we apply it – it is a very natural colour) , so you will leave the salon with a golden tan.
How to Prepare for your Spray Tan
Before you come into the salon, its a good idea to have any shaving or waxing done already and when you have your shower the night or morning before your spray tan, make sure you scrub your elbows, knees, ankles (use an exfoliator if you have one) – this will prevent the tan over absorbing into the dry areas of your skin.
What will happen at the Spa
When you come to the spa, we will give you moisturiser to apply to the typically dry areas, like elbows, knees and ankles before we do the spray tan.
We also have disposable underwear, or you can go without or you can wear your own if you prefer – better a dark colour, however the tan does wash out if it gets on your clothes. We also provide ‘sticky feet’ – to prevent tan getting on the to bottom of your feet.
How long will it take for the tan to develop?
There are a few options, depending on the tanning brand you choose, you can shower either 2hrs or 4-6 hrs after your spray tan or you may choose the overnight tan, that you would normally wear 12-15 hrs before showering. Both tanning brands develop to a very similar colour and both a very natural golden brown in tone (we also have an earthy tone option too if you prefer)
What should I wear after the Tan?
After your tan, it is best to wear something loose fitting (like your gym clothes), with long sleeves and long legs pants (like loose leggings) as this will protect your tan from any drops of rain or drips from AC units after you leave the salon. Also we suggest you have ‘flip flops’ to wear home for your feet.
How long will the tan last?
The tan usually lasts at least 7-10 days and 2-3 weeks (or more) when you use the gradual tan as an extender. We have gradual tan available for both brands at the salon.
Are these spray tans suitable for both Men and Women?
What does a spray tan cost?
A one off Spray Tan is $580, and if you are interested we offer summer packages of 5 or 10 session that bring the cost down to $520 and $480 respectively.
